Gaecheon Art Festival was held in 1949 (4282 in the Dangun Era), as 1st Yeongnam Arts Festival, for celebrating 1st anniversary of actual independence of Government’s foundation and development of art and culture. This is the biggest and best art festival in the nation, which has being keeping connection in much difficult any conditions every year except for Korean War in 1950 and 10.26 in 1979 since then.
In 1959, this festival with name of Gaecheon Art Festival changed from Yeongnam Art Festival was held, and the first art festival attending opening ceremony from year 1964 to 1968.
This festival attempted new change with theme as popularization of fine art in 1974 celebrating 25th, and appointed as Gyeongsangnam-do’s comprehensive art festival in 1983 celebrating 33th, and accordingly, this keeps its place. Gaecheon Art Festival is contributed to improvement of our art and culture through traditional art contest, and is considered to make a great contribution towards improvement of regional culture. In particular. since 1999 celebrating 49th, general improvement and change has been pursued, by permanently operating planning office for raising Gaecheon Art Festival to global cultural goods.

Gaecheon Art Festival, beginning of national cultural festival, presents night scene presenting a grand sight of the place, as lantern used as sign of informing of family’s welfare by soldiers in Japanese Invasion of Korea get joined together with Nam River.
Various events of 7 sections and 60 events of opening rite, opening ceremony, art and culture events, i.e. event of floating lantern on Nam River during event period (Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival, appointed as culture and tourism festival by Ministry of Culture and Tourism), Nam In-Soo Song Festival, Bullfighting Festival, various literacy events, teenagers festival, etc. are held.

Jinju, thousand-year-old city, is famous for excellent traditional art, so as to be called as Southern pearl of Northern Pyeongyang, from old times. Jinju’s worthwhile cultural-artists, based on the region’s excellent traditional arts, made up their mind to originate traditional art festival which contained devotion of 7 ten thousands of citizens, civil servants, soldiers including Nongae dying for her’s country in Jinju Castle in Japanese Invasion of Korea and where many citizens can attend, and formed Jinju Nongae Festival, with『 Euiam Special Festival 』as the central figure proceed to that period.

Jinju Nongae Festival is held on 4th Friday, Saturday, Sunday of May every year, for 3 days, in Jinju Castle, remains of castle of defense of our country and faithfulness, and as originated by Jinju’s General Jeong, Hyun-Seok in 1868, includes interest, music, dance in religious service, and is linked to folk art where beauty of Gyobang Culture leaved by Jinju Gisaeng and folk art including Jinju Ogwangdae is felt, with opening of Euiam Special Festival, unique-form religious ceremony where only women are officiating priest, and with one body with masked dance and Daedong Nori, and accordingly, this festival’s finale will be accomplished.
It is said that the most regional one is the most worldwide. By all means, because Jinju Nongae Festival has theme of single thing in Jinju, non-copied in other regions, this festival is expected to be possible for improving as global festival, and also, Nongae Festival held in Spring for traditional art will make Jinju be improved as festival’s city suitable for fame of culture and art’s district, for fine art, with Gaecheon Art Festival held in Autumn.
